After nearly 24 hours of continuous connection I downloaded the OS X Lion from the App store successfully. (Thanks Rabin for the Gift & NCell for the Connection). Till that time I was running the Latest Snow Leopard on my 13″ Macbook Pro. As the Lion was downloaded in my Mac, I began to install it. It went smooth until the restart. When it was restarted, it began to install Lion showing it will take 38 minutes to complete but after few minutes it failed.
I got following error message:
Install Failed
Mac OS X could not be installed on your computer
Mac OS X couldn’t be installed, because the disk Macintosh HD is damaged and can’t be repaired.
OH MY GOD! What is this? How could I believe that my Macintosh HD is damaged! It was like having mini heart attack… 😉
After restart, I accessed top menu bar to use Disk Utility. I clicked on Verify Disk, but I got error with that tool too.
Invalid node structure.
The volume Macintosh HD could not be verified completely.
Error: This disk needs to be repaired. Click Repair Disk.
I tried ‘Repair Disk’ option after that but nothing was om my favor, I got error with that too.
Disk Utility stopped repairing “Macintosh HD”
Disk Utility can’t repair this disk. Back up as many of your files as possible, reformat the disk, and restore your backed up files.
The level of panic was increasing with new error messages. I was only remembering my data inside the macintosh HD. I tried different ways to repair the disk with -bash commands but nothing was fruitful.
As the neXt try I put in the original install DVD of SnowLeopard that I got with my Mac, and booted with that. I tried to verify and repair HD with the Disk Utility but that also gave the same result. I asked with Google regarding that issue but the result wasn’t in my way. But after few more try with different search keywords I found a way as follows:
- Boot from ‘Snow Leopard DVD’ by holding down Alt after the chimes and selecting the DVD option.
- Run Utilities -> Disk Utility.
- Click on “Macintosh HD” and then “Unmount”.
- Close Disk Utility.
- Run Utilities -> Terminal
- Run the command: fsck_hfs -rf /dev/disk0s2 (Your partition name might be different.)
- Run it again until it says “Volume Repair Completed”. (Mine was ready with 4 attempts.)
- Close Terminal.
- Run Utilities -> Disk Utility.
- Click on “Macintosh HD” and then “Verify Disk”.
- Verify should come back ok this time.
- Click on “Macintosh HD” and then “Mount”.
- Choose “OSX 10.6.8” as your startup disk.
- Reboot.
With these 14 steps I got my Snow Leopard back with the Lion Installation Application still in the Dock ready to run. I then continued the installation of Lion from the Dock, after few minutes, my Mac was restarted. After the restart, it began to install Lion showing it will take 38 minutes to complete AND this time it went well till the end.
