I was dumbfounded when one of my teachers said that happiness can be measured. How can something as abstract as happiness be measured? I wondered. Even if it could be what will be our measuring rod?
The happiness I talk about is fast disappearing from the world. Happiness, that excited, elated state of mind that sends our spirits soaring, has almost been rooted out of existence through misguided human efforts to achieve the same. The very notion of happiness seems to have undergone a radical shift.
How many people are living with dignity and integrity, if the terms have any meaning these days? Instead, our minds are full of negative feelings like jealousy and hatred. We delight in distractions and diversions, mistaking them for happiness. But aren’t they causing more misery?
A truly happy person finds happiness in the direst of circumstances, even amidst death and despair. The caveat: Cast aside all negative influences. It’s not easy but there is no other way out. One of the best ways to attain happiness is through altruistic deeds. Learning to be happy at the accomplishment of other people and, if possible, by helping them in whatever ways we could is a sure way to happiness.
Under pressure, we should not worry endlessly, but enjoy the moment as the true test of our character. This kind of attitude will influence those around us to discover happiness. Fear and apprehension need to be conquered with positive mindset and unyielding belief in a positive outcome through effort and dedication. Someone has rightly said: “True character of the person comes out when the chips are down”.
Let’s learn to see the positive side of things instead of mulling tirelessly over gloomy options and our sorry past. By distancing ourselves from the negative elements like these, we are bound to open up new avenues to joy. Learning to love everyone around us only adds to our joy.
Happiness is contagious. Once you smile, those around you can’t help but follow your initiation. The only way to ensure a happy world, then, is to be happy yourself. Hence happiness is the greatest good in the world. The time to be happy: right now. The place: right here.
